I own all three sims now. Being a Mac user has led me to try them all to see what runs best under a VM or native, etc. I don't run a bootcamp install, although I'm not opposed to it. I thought I would start a thread to get others input on my observations for those of us who who have tried multiple sims or run on Mac. Phoenix - this sim is the best looking, and has the most desire able collection of Heli's based on my limited experience. Using my radio for the controller is nice. The Frame rate running under a windows 7 VM is good, and the program loads fast.
No errors or issues at all. However I think the physics are not realistic. I've tried editing the heli's and customizing various models to find something that is close to realistic feel of flying a real heli. It's not close IMO or I have not stumbled upon the right setup.
I feel like I'm going backwards and getting worse when I use this sim and the heli's are much harder to fly than in reality. Real flight - looks good, more realistic physics and feel, but the heli's seem easier to fly than in real life.
I can do things in this sim that I can't do in reality. It runs like garbage in a VM, frame rate is barely tolerable in an XP VM, unusable in a win 7 VM, and it crashes a lot. The controller disconnects a lot too, requiring several attempts to get it started. Once started it runs ok but it can be a bit frustrating in a VM. To be fair I have installed on my sons game pc and it does run much more stable native, however it is a very bloated application and takes longer than the others to load. Heli-X - this sim runs native on Mac, win, or Linux.
It's not as cosmetically polished as the others, but WOW was I pleasantly surprised. The physics feel great, it's the closest IMO to the real thing and has some great training tools. It does lack a huge selection of 'popular' heli's but it does have a few of the common ones and a good selection of 'generic' models. It is very fast and runs native in MAC, it is compatible with the real flight controller. I've found that this has become my go to sim since its so stable and runs fast. It is also very reasonably priced. The main drawback to this sim is the lack of polished looking airports and curb appeal, however it makes up for it in mechanics and overall usability IMO.
I have not been able to get it to work using the Phoenix dongle with my radio, but there may be other USB adapters out there. If this SIm was as polished and had the models of Phoenix the others would go out of business. Another nice thing about it is that you can download a fully functional demo, (only 5 heli's 1 airport, and an occasional nag screen) Discuss?
Of the 3 sims, I've tried only Phoenix 4. Besides, I've tried Clearview RC (a 'fair' simulator but not in the top league) and Mark's Helisim (freeware). The only sim I could run properly on a VM (VirtualBox) is Helisim, Clearview won't run, and Phoenix runs very poorly, with slow frame rate and occasional abends. My machine is a 4-core AMD Phenom II with a GeForce GTX285, not the bleeding edge but still beefy for today's standards. VMs are great for productivity, I run VirtualBox at work on a Linux host and a Windows guest, the Office suite and the development tools run without a hitch. But games and sims are a totally different issue, as others said, try to run the sim natively. This is not a bashing, just what works for me.
Both work good and good tools but phoenix is the worse sim I ever used.Phoenix is more on par with the free sims you can download for nothing.Used Realflight for 4 years stright while trying Phoenix in between.Made the mistake about a year ago and bought Phoenix again for the 4th time and sold Realflight.Been flying Phoenix close to a year now and all its good for is learning stick movements. It flys so unrealistic that its slowed learning down.Only reason I still have it is im waiting to buy another Realflight so I can give Phoenix to my 3 year old. Others have a different opinion as everyone likes a different feel.If I thought Phoenix was total crap,I wouldn't have it right now. Your point of view is skewed because you are using first two in sub par environment. A simulator needs 60+ FPS to feel correctly. Boot your mac in native windows mode and check again. Personally I find both Real Flight 6.5 and Next vastly superior to Phoenix (I own all 3) when it comes to physics.
They all look good enough for what they do, they are not ugly, so I don't really care. I did state that I've run real flight on my sons game pc natively in my first post. Again, it was much more stable and smoother, however it's still not as realistic to me as Heli-x.
Phoenix runs great in a VM (it is a recommended configuration) and the frame rate is fine. The host environment won't affect the physics of flight, only the frame rate.
There are things I like about all three. If I had to choose just one though, it would be Heli-X I know there are a ton of Phoenix lovers here on HF, perhaps some can share what heli's and settings they are using to make it more realistic? I used Slyster's Goblin 700 sound file and that improved the sim for me. For me it is not about realism but more of practicing muscle memory. For example, due to bad weather and work I have not been able to fly my real helis for more than 3 weeks but have been flying Phoenix 4 maybe every 2 or 3 days. I can only last 20 minutes using the sim LOL.
Anyways I maidened my Atom 500 this morning and despite the winds I felt like I have not stopped flying at all. I was calm and relaxed and I think it is partly because of the sim. When I had Realflight G3.5 and G4.5,I could sim for 5 or so hours a day/5-6 days a week.I feel 100% connected to the helis as they fly damn close to my real ones. When I try something on Realflight,I can do it the exact same way with my real helis. If its crappy, its crappy with my real heli and if its getting better, its getting better with my real heli.Going from RealFlight to my real heli has always been the same and Realflight is the main reason I learn how far I can push myself before crashing lol. Not so much with Phoenix.Just doing simple things I do daily,I crash ALOT trying it on Phoenix and its made learning new things sooooo much harder. My progress went down hill as in slowed down ALOT.It doesn't feel right and the flight characteristics change during flight. You have to enjoy the sim to stay on it and I don't enjoy Phoenix at all.Went from a few hrs a day/5ish days a week with Realflight to 30mins max and lucky if I use it 3 days a week with Phoenix. Realflight has always ran better on my Computers over Phoenix and I don't have a high dollar PC.
Everyone is different and likes different thing, feels looks ect.If you try another sim (doesn't have to be Realflight),you might find you enjoy it more.If that happens you'll put a TON more sim hours in and use it more days a week- progress will go smoother and faster. I have been using RF since version 2. When Phoenix version 3 first came out, I was so tired of listening to how much better it was than RF, I bought it just to see. I'm sorry.but the physics are crap compared to RF. And that was before RF up-ed their game with version 6. Each time a Phoenix update comes out, I dust off its dongle and try the newest version. I always end up throwing the dongle back on the shelf and go back to RF.
As has already been stated, you need at LEAST 60fps or any sim is not going to allow proper feel. Your PC/graphics card must be up to the task. If all you are doing is learning to hover or slow forward flight, you won't really notice any difference between RF and Phoenix. Once you get into any kind of pitch pumping move, or fast flight that involves changing direction or orientation, then Phoenix isn't even close to RF for realism. RF allows you to transition the new move to the real heli MUCH more easily. Phoenix just feels fake.
I was really hoping when version 4 of Phoenix was released, that they put some serious work into getting their physics up to snuff. Unfortunately, it seems they put all their time and effort into only eye candy. Big disappointment. Password Please enter a password for your user account. Note that passwords are case-sensitive.
